Unesco World Heritage - Brühl Castles

The city Brühl, about 15km south of Cologne, is home to the Brühl Castle Augustusburg, a nice destination for fans of baroque palaces. Commissioned by the Elector and Archbishop of Cologne - Clemens August von Wittelsbach, three of the period’s best architects collaborated on this elegant residence in Brühl. Johann C. Schlaun started with the contruction of the Brühl Castle in 1725 but three years later Francois Cuvilliés was appointed for a redesign into a more modern style.

Today especially the garden of Brühl Castle, modeled on Versailles, is popular for those who want to relax in nature. Enjoy a coffee on the Brühl Castles terrace with a nice view over the park complex with its fountains and sculptures or just walk to the nearby smaller Brühl Castle Falkenlust. In that hunting lodge Clemens August could pursue his favourite hobby falconry and entertain guests or occasionally receive lady visitors in the preciously equipped rooms. In 1984 the castles Falkenlust and Brühl Castle Augustusburg were inscribed together in the World Heritage list as examples of beautifully preserved rococo architecture. The interior of the Brühl Castle, which must be seen on a guided tour, incorporates every architectural and decorative element the baroque era had to offer.

The most impressive feature is the ceremonial staircaise made by architect Balthasar Neumann, who was responsible for the design of the Residence Würzburg too. The staircaise of Brühl Castle is a symphony of stucco, sculpture and faux marble, crowned by a multicoloured ceiling fresco by Carlo Carlone.
